Google Read & Write extension    Read&Write for iPad on the App Store
This is a great tool that will help you read things on the computer. It will also let you speak your writing assignments instead of doing all that typing. Here are links for how to install this extension and also for how to use it. Please let me know if you need help or have questions. It's a great tool!

A Little SPOT of Anxiety: A Story About Calming Your Worries ...

Hello from Ms. McDermott and Ms. Williams in Room 11!

We have enjoyed connecting to more students this week and hope to see even more of you next week!

We hope you were able to receive your room 11 packet. If not, please email us and let us know. Packet distribution is a new process, and we’re all learning how to make it better every day.

Toward the end of last week, we received information from the Oregon Department of Education giving direction about how to implement IEPs while Distance Learning for All is happening. Long story short, we need to implement them “as written” with regards to the amount of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI or services) kids receive. However, they expanded the ways we can provide the services. Our goal is still to provide as much access to the regular classroom curriculum, so that can now count as SDI. This way, for any of you who are feeling like you have a good system and it’s working, we do not need to make any changes. For this reason, we have not provided a new Room 11 packet for this week.

And yet, we know that not all of our students are going to access that material. As a special ed team, we will be consulting with the regular education teams to make materials as accessible as possible, AND we’ll provide alternatives where appropriate. Additionally, we know some of you are real “go-getters” and would like to do all the regular classroom work and the work from room 11. If you would like more work for your child, please let us know and we’ll set you up. We can set you up as a pseudo-IA to provide more instruction for your child. We want to do this cautiously so we do not overwhelm students, but we also know some kids/parents are ready!

Finally, we are still working through ways to provide social skills instruction to those students who have that service. It’s a bit tricky to practice skills for socialization when socializing is the very thing we’ve been asked to not do. However, I think we can do some Google Meets sessions and talk about strategies for managing emotions. This would be in addition to the great work being done by Ms. Miranda & Ms. Darcey for those who are ready for more.

Remember, you can login to the Office Hours class and leave messages or schedule time to meet with a teacher. Some of you have done this and we’re happy to help!

Warm regards,

Ms. McDermott and Ms. Williams

I know people are having difficulty with navigating so many new resources from teachers. One question that comes up a lot is accessing Google Classroom. It is more difficult to access if you are not logged in to your child's google account. Therefore, I'm attaching a YouTube video that teaches you how to switch google accounts. It's not from our school district, but it is helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTjx3bd5TO4
Also, here's one that teaches some basics about Google Classroom. You should only need classroom codes if the teacher has not invited them to the page (meaning we put in the child's email into the class roster). Here's a link to help with that. Again, not from JCSD, but helpful nonetheless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7VK7KPfMAU
As always, if you are feeling overwhelmed, or you really aren't sure how to access anything at all, please feel free to email me and we'll set up a time to work through it together. Right now, Room 11 is only using the Office Hours Google Classroom. The rest were set up for future use. Please spend this week making sure you can get into the different websites and virtual classrooms, as well as working through any materials that were sent home by your child's regular classroom teacher. Room 11 is here to help with any of that work this week as well. Just let me know what you need.
Miss you all and wish I could see your children in person!
I know this is a very unique time in our world and it is creating some interesting changes in how we educate our children. I will be learning how to implement these changes along with everyone else. Please look forward to exciting ways to receive supports from the special education team at Laurel so we can continue the very important learning students need and deserve.
In addition to changes in learning, this will also create changes for meetings. Later this week (early April), I will begin making phone calls to families to: touch base with what's working and determine your needs, and discuss the ramifications for IEP meetings for those who still need a meeting this year. We have some great online tools for holding virtual meetings and if nothing else works, we can still do conference calls.
I will end for the moment by noting the famous cliche: "Where there's a will there's a way." I have always been too stubborn to give up on finding ways to meet the needs of my students, and I see no reason to change now. I believe this is an opportunity to propel us forward in the use of technology in our teaching and I anticipate that it will actually open more doors for our students in the long run. We will get through this TOGETHER.
I miss you all and look forward to connecting with you throughout this week and next. Stay safe and well!

Since it is now Summer Vacation, I will not have regular office hours. I might check email once in a while over summer. If you have questions, feel free to email me and I'll get back to you when I can. I wish you all a safe and relaxing summer!
