Message from 2021-2022 Incoming Laurel Principal, Kevin Gordon

Good Afternoon Laurel Elementary School Staff and Families,
I am incredibly excited to be writing this letter introducing myself as Principal of Laurel Elementary School starting July 1, 2021. I had the privilege of teaching at Laurel from September 2011 through 2014 with the 4th grade team and grew to love the school, the district and the community that encompasses them.
I am a life long Oregonian and grew up in north Eugene, attending Awbrey Park Elementary, Madison Middle and North Eugene High School.  After high school, I earned my Bachelors degree at the University of Oregon and my Masters degree at Pacific University. My first teaching position was at Parker Elementary School where I loved
teaching 4th and 5th grades, built an elementary elective program, rich in project based learning, student voice and choice and teachers teaming up to deliver an amazing program for all of our kiddos. A few years later, we designed an outdoor school program for our fifth graders and an articulated 6 year plan of field trips and experiences that kids grew to look forward to each year.
Joining the 4th grade team and staff at Laurel in 2011 was a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself in a new school and community. These years were of full of personal growth and fantastic teamwork for our kids. I left Laurel for my first principalship at Adams Elementary where I spent five years with a talented team, crafting school-wide systems to support students and celebrate our learning community and continued this work after moving to Camas Ridge.
When I learned of the open at Laurel I jumped at the chance to rejoin the Junction City School District and am grateful for the opportunity to work with the strong team of teachers there. I can’t wait to reconnect with colleagues and families in the Laurel community.
When I’m not in school, I keep busy with family and the great outdoors. My wife, also an educator, and our kids, a senior and a freshman, love to camp, kayak, hike and bike all around the state and beyond. We’ll be visiting Yellowstone this summer in our quest to see all national parks. At home I love to cook for family and friends, I read voraciously and run A LOT! I am looking forward to the Scandia Run during the Scandinavian Festival this summer as a part of my marathon training for the Portland marathon this fall. Maybe some of you will come and run with me!
I am eager meet all our kids and getting to know Laurel families this summer and fall.  I wish you all the best as you wrap up this crazy school year and look forward to a summer full of time with friends and family.
With Gratitude and Anticipation,
Kevin Gordon
